Contemporary Sculptors of Chicago: Jennifer Dickson

"Bridge".. by Jennifer Dickson..

Continuing with my series on Contemporary Sculptors of Chicago.. Here's Jennifer Dickson..
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet the young and talented, Jennifer Dickson. In my last post I had written that when I saw the piece "Bridge".. I had no idea who the artist was, and later when I found out, I was surprised how young she is. Well yesterday I found out, that Bridge was her very first piece of Public Art! And that is very impressive! Her works can be described as modern figurative sculptures. There are so few sculptors in Chicago who still pursue figure sculptures, which always makes me wonder why? But whenever I see one, I am always happy!

In her home studio, sitting on the couch and over a cup of chai-tea, we had a very interesting conversion on Public Art. Jennifer draws her inspirations from Antony Gormley's works and loves Jaume Plensa and Anish Kapoor. We discussed Tony Tasset's "Eye".. and Magdalena Abakanowicz's "Agora".. which both of us love! [As much as I love Lorado Taft, my all time fav, I also appreciate modern and abstract figures.. In short, I like all types of "Figure" sculptures].. Enough about me, this post is on Jennifer.. And like so many other sculptors, she began with paintings, but once she started sculptors, she never went back..

Jennifer is a graduate of Northeastern Illinois University with a degree in social and urban geography.. In her website, she described her work as..
My research focused on the use of space, trying to understand how it is produced and experienced through our social practices and every day lives. I continue to pursue this research through my work and understanding as an artist. In particular, I am interested in how our production of space affects our relationship to our natural environment and to each other. My goal is to apply this knowledge to the creation of individual sculptural pieces and installations that directly engage the viewer physically, mentally and emotionally by creating new places within our everyday landscape that challenge our traditional experience of space and inspire new perspectives....

I wish Jennifer the Very Best with her works..
And I am sure she has a very bright future..

Below are some of her works in her home studio..
