When I was at Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park, this August, 2010, I saw
this piece "Spiral" by Clement Meadmore, placed at the back of a truck. I knew it was being taken for refurbishing, but where, I didnt know. Than I saw it at the Vector foundry.. Although refurbished at the Vector foundry, I don't think it was fabricated here..

Is Christine Rojek's "ReIncarnation", also fabricated there???

I have a feeling I will be visiting Vector foundry again, very soon..

A Day Trip to the Vector Custom Fabricating..

Steve Mueller..

John Himmelfarb..

Adrian Calderon..

A day-trip to the Vector Custom Fabricating Inc. Foundry..
I begin with a Thank You note to Steve Muellen for inviting me to Vector Custom Fabricating foundry.. I loved the place! For those who are not aware of Vector Fabricating Inc., it was established in 1978, and supplies Architectural and Ornamental Metals for exterior and interior high profile areas. It specializes in architectural elements, monumental stairs, railings and sculpture..
Meeting with sculptors Christine Rojek and Adrian Calderon, [both of who work at Vector], I had expressed my wish to see the foundry, where the actual metal fabrication, metal cutting, welding, machining takes place. And this Saturday, I could take a day-trip to the place.. Thanks to Steve Mueller for the invitation!

John Himmelfarb, working on a small-scale sculptural piece at the Vector foundry. John is an independent sculptor and a friend of Steve Mueller..

One of my attractions of being to Vector was to see this refurbished "Spiral" sculptural piece by Clement Meadmore. It is made of Cor-Ten steel, and was getting damaged by water-collection at it's base. It was brought to Vector for refurbishing, and would soon be sent back to the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park, where it is a part of the sculpture garden's permanent collection...

Machines, Tools and Implements..
Adrian took me around the foundry and showed the different tools and implements.. I bet, he was contemplating how much of anything would I understand. And I can say with great confidence, that he loves the machines and tools!!! He would often go like, "This baby is from Germany"..

One of the custom made staircases...

I saw many sculptural pieces, here there are images of pieces by Neil Goodman, Nathan Overly and Steve Muller.. The small-scale sculptural installations I had documented at the Cliff Dwellers are now at the Vector, and would soon be sent to Mark A. Chapman Gallery in Kansas..

There are many more sculptures I saw there, but the post would become too long, so I end with an image of the foundry.. Many more photos can be seen in my FB Photo Album, check out the related links below..

At the Vector Custom Fabricating

Passing the Baton..
Yesterday, I was at the Vector Custom Fabricating foundry ... Took many photos, but my favourite is the above image of Steve Mueller and Adrian Calderon.. I just love it!!!
It's like two individuals sharing a common bond, one at the top of his game, other at the beginning.. The smile on their faces is so genuine, so heart felt. They are looking at a book with photographs of sculptures. I have rarely named images, but I name this "Passing the Baton". To me it's symbolic of how tradition passes in a very informal, congenial, working-n-sharing together enviornment..

Adrian Calderon and Steve Mueller..

Many Many more photos of Vector Fabricating Inc. to come..

Contemporary Sculptors of Chicago: Terrence Karpowicz..

"Symbiotic Parralax".. at the University of Illinois..

"Concurrence".. at the Illinois Institute of Technology..

CONGRATULATIONS to Terrence Karpowicz.. .
I am so proud to share the news that my dear friend, my supporter, my mentor Terrence Karpowicz.. is this year's recipients of the Helen Coburn Meier and Tim Meier Charitable Foundation for the Arts Achievement Award. The award "recognizes Chicago-based artists in mid-career who push the artistic envelope."
Terrence Karpowicz was one of the first few sculptors I have met in Chicago and with him, began my series on Contemporary Sculptors of Chicago.. I'm re posting it today..

The beginning [of my series on the Contemporary Sculptors of Chicago..]..
The post originally published on March 9, 2010..
Me [Me to Terrenece Karpowicz]... Let me make clear, I am not a professional photographer or writer, not associated with any publisher or magazine. I'm an amateur, and like to document public art in Chicago through my blog. Would you still be open to meet with me?
Terrence Karpowicz: Of course! I like your photographs and I like what you are doing..
Me: Thank You! It means so much to me.
[ Paraphrased, because I can't remember the exact words, but it was something close.. Do I need to reiterate, I am no professional!]
Then we set a date and I was at the Karpowicz Studio..

Above images.. at the Karpowicz Studio....

And so began my meeting with Terrence Karpowicz, a Chicago-based sculptor with multiple commissions, exhibitions, publications, grants and awards.. Terrence Karpowicz is known for his technique of joinery, and his large-scale sculptural installations mostly involves different metals, stones and wood integrated together. He has also joined organic materials, tree limbs, field stones and jagged shards of granite with geometric-shaped, machine-tooled metal bases.
Terrence not only welcomed me to his studio, but showed his work-place, allowed me to take whatever photographs I wished, gave me a whole lot of information materials to read, and as if all that was not enough.. took me around the town to numerous locations where his works are displayed. I have to emphasize here, that he was equally emphatic about the wonderful works of his peers, the "sculptors community" as he so fondly referred to them, showing me the works of John Henry, Barry Hehemann, Mary Brogger, Alison Saar and William Carlson among others.. And did I mention the lovely Sachiyo Yoshida, who works for Terrence Karpowicz. We have been communicating for a long time and she was happy to come along.. Our trip ended with lunch at Sachiyo's favourite restaurant in Chinatown, Lao Sze Chaun..

Thank You so much Mr. Karpowicz!
The meeting helps me in documenting public art in Chicago..
Thank You to Sachiyo too!
