Statue of the Republic

The Republic is a one-third reproduction of the 65-foot-high sculpture, which originally dominated the World's Columbian Exposition's Court of Honor. Both the earlier sculpture and its later reproduction were both the work of Daniel Chester French.. The figure has classical drapery and carries symbolic ornaments.. a laurel wreath on the head, a shield with eagle, in her right hand is a globe with an eagle hovering over, and in her left hand is a lance crowned by a Phrygian cap -a sign of the French revolution.. The intent was to express the republic of the United States and its form of government.

Henry Bacon's base is inscribed on both the front and the back.
The front reads..
The Republic
To commemorate the
World's Columbian Exposition
MDCCCXCIII..

The back of the base contains a more detailed inscription..
The World's Columbian Exposition..
Authorized by the Act of Congress
And Generously Participated in
By the Nations of The Earth
Was held here in 1893 to celebrate
The Discovery of America
On this site stood the Administration Building..

The Columbian Exposition was arguably the single-most important event in American architectural history due to its impact on American architecture, especially public architecture...

This is another monument funded by the B.F. Ferguson Fund..

Artistic Collaborations..
The famous Lincoln Memorial in the National Mall at Washington, D.C. also has the same partnership.. Daniel Chester French as the sculptor of the main statue and Henry Bacon as the architect.. A reduced version of the full size statue in the Lincoln Memorial, is at the Art Institute of Chicago, where there's another beautiful work by French "Truth"..

Want to tell you what a fantastic job you do documenting the public art in Chicago. You are by far the best source for finding information on the vast and changing collection. Ever thought about publishing a book?

I really enjoy all the 1893 World Fair Sculpters. After reading Devil in the White City, it's nice to see the actual artifacts.

Thank you for sharing them with us.
