The Chicago Athenaeum

The Chicago Athenaeum is an international museum of architecture and design, appropriately based in Chicago. The Museum is dedicated to the Art of Design in all areas of the discipline: architecture, industrial and product design, graphics, landscape architecture, and urban planning. The Museum's mission is the advancement of public education about the value of Good Design - from the "spoon to the city" - and how design can positively impact the human environment.

As an International Museum, The Chicago Athenaeum maintains offices and operations in Chicago, Schaumburg (Illinois), Galena (Illinois) as well as Dublin (Ireland) and Athens (Greece).

The South Garden at the Art Institute of Chicago was built in 1962. 

It was designed by the master landscape architect Dan Kiley.

The North Garden

Made in 1960, it is also known as the Stanley McCormick Memorial Court. 

It was constructed by Holabird & Root & Burgee. 

It was designed, as a sculpture court, by the landscape architect Laurie Olin.

* Silsbee also designed the nearby Carlson Cottage

Completed: The conservatory was constructed in phases between 1890 and 1895. It replaced a small greenhouse that dated from the 1870s. The conservatory has four display houses: the Palm House, Fern Room, Orchid House and Show House [home to the annual flower shows].

After Richard A. Bloch, co-founder of H & R Block, Inc. survived what he had been told was "terminal" lung cancer, he established a foundation to help others fight and recover from cancer. The foundation has given gifts to create Cancer Survivor's parks and gardens throughout the nation. When the foundation offered such a gift to the Chicago Park District in the 1990s, designers Miriam Gusevitch, Julie Gross, and Dan Purciarello developed a scheme specifically for its site on the northeast side of Grant Park.
