AIC: The Evolution of Head Sculptures

A sculptor is a person obsessed with the form and shape of things.
- Henry Moore
The different style in arts, is evident in these head sculptures.. We see the neo-classical, cubist, stylized, distorted and grotesque forms.. and an ancient Egyptian too!

Image 1: Abdiel - By Horation Greenough /1838
Image 2: Head of Pierre de Wissant - By Auguste Rodin /1889
Image 3: Head of a Woman - By Pablo Picasso /1909
Image 4: White Negress - By Constantin Brancusi /1928
Image 5: Head - By Alberto Giacometti /1934
Image 6: Head #3 - By William de Kooning / 1973
Image 7: Head of an Official - Egyptian / 1783 BC..

I can understand Picasso's multiple viewpoints, Brancusi's stylization and Kooning's grotesquification..
But what was Giacometti thinking???

How is this a head?
Wonder what images he had on his mind, when he looked around at people??

Excellent post about the evolution of head sculptures.
I don't know what images had Alberto Giacometti on his mind, when he looked around at people ;-), but I love his sculptures and imagination.
