Gas pipes connect building block storyboards depicting species directly affected by man, such as the short-eared owl, honey bee, and spotted newt. The lawn and dandelion represents the wide use of herbicides, cracked earth represents consequences of clear cut forests, smoke stacks and utility poles represent energy consumption and pollution.

Becoming That Girl..

Sometimes people compliment you, without realizing it.. Probably Christine Rojeck still is not aware how happy she made me, when she said..
Ohh You are THAT girl...

Here's the backdrop..
Event: "Form in Flora" installation at the Garfield Park Conservatory..
Christine Rojek was installing her work "Reincarnation", chatting with her husband, who was helping her. And I was taking photos. Initially she ignored me, but after sometime she asked something like why was I taking the photos.. And I replied that I was trying to document the installations.
Immediately she exclaimed.. Oh you are THAT girl!
And I said... YES! THAT girl!
Both understood what it meant...
And hopefully, most in the sculpture community of Chicago would understand what it means..

I have been enjoying documenting Public Art of Chicago, for the past four years now.. but this year has been special, as I started meeting people behind the Art, the Sculptors! And the sculptor community of Chicago has been extremely good to me. Thank You All!!!



I had also attended the earlier CSI meeting at the Garfield Park, [image above] when the event "Form in Flora" was at the planning stage. I remember then Dusty Folwarczny had introduced me to the group, as someone who documents Public Art in Chicago. I already knew some artists, and some I met for the first time..

It is my endeavour to meet sculptors with Public Installations..
I have met a few artists on a one-to-one basis, in their studios..
Terrence Karpowicz, Richard Howard Hunt, Preston Jackson, Sharon Bladholm, Ruth Aizuss Migdal, Jennifer Dickson, John Adduci, Ted Sitting Crow Garner and Bob Emser..

Here's another good reason to visit the Garfield Park Conservatory...
To see this plant jutting out of the Desert Room..
Its AGAVE, and it blooms only once in it's lifetime. It's flowering process takes over a year and the process has begun. The flower buds have started to form, and when they bloom, there will be about 50,000- to 100,000 individual flowers, blooming for about 4-6 months, and then the plant will die out. The flower stalk /mast, has become so tall that a glass panel from the roof of the Desert House had to be removed, and it has already jutted out about 3-4 feet above the roof..







The marker reads..
Our Agave is Flowering..
Agave grows very slowly and most flower only once. During flowering, a tall stem or "mast" grows from the center of the leaf rosette. After development of fruit this plant will die, but pups [root sprouts which become new plants] are often produced at the base of the stem.
- The flower stalk appeared in early August and will be pollinated bu bats and moths..
- The stalk look like giant asparagus, to which Agaves are related..
- the entire flower process takes about a year and the stalk will flowers for 4-6 months..
- The stalk in it's entirety will contain 50,000 - 100,000 individual flowers..
- The flower stalk will weight approx. 40 pounds..

Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park - Grand Rapids, Michigan

My trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan was essentially to see the Chicago artists participation at the Art Prize, 2010.. click here..

One of the high points of my Grand Rapids tour was temporary exhibit..A New Eden - By Dale Chihuly.. at the Frederik Meijer Garden & Sculpture Park.. I was not aware of this exhibit when I made my trip to Grand Rapids to see the Art Prize, 2010.. Over a course of three years, Chihuly developed 15 stunning sites in celebration of the 15th Anniversary of Meijer Gardens.. Here's images of a few..

Dale Chihuly.. Is well-known for his glass-works, especially the fine art of glass blowing. He has been awarded eight honorary doctorates and two fellowships from the National Endowments for the Arts..
In my Day Trip to Frederick Meijer Garden and Sculpture Park, in Grand Rapids, Michigan.. I was luck to see a Temporary Exhibit, "A New Eden", with works by Dale Chihuly. the above images are from the Temporay Exhibit.

However, the Frederick Meijer's Garden, there are some permanent installtions by dale Chihuly as well..
